Gilbert Binninger Obituary

Gilbert Clayton Binninger of Fairfax Station, VA, born September 19, 1945, in Dallas, Texas, died Monday, May 20, 2024, of complications from a heart attack. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pamela Sue Binninger, and his son, Matthew Clayton Binninger, San Diego, CA.

Gil received his B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Oklahoma, and his M.S. in Applied Statistics and Mathematics at George Washington University. He was a senior analyst at Science Applications International Corporation (currently Leidos) for over 40 years, studying nuclear weapons effects for the federal government. He had a love for learning and tutoring others, including colleagues as well as friends, in the fields of math, science, and investing. During his tenure he mentored several new employees, many of whom credited him with influencing their careers.

Gil had a passion for running unlike any other. Over the last 30 years, he recorded enough miles to have circumvented the globe—twice. Known in his neighborhood as "the running man," he was a fixture in the neighborhood for decades and developed many friendships along the way.

A lover of animals, the environment, and social justice causes, Gil and Pam donated money to benefit marine mammals, blue penguins, wolves, loons, and shelter animals. He was particularly enamored of the work of Best Friends in Kanab, Utah, whose "no kill" mission he fully supported. He also donated generously to fund a research vessel in San Diego designed to study oceanic conditions. Additionally, he supported the California Innocence Project and The Innocence Center, which help wrongfully convicted people get out of prison.

Gil was known by everyone who knew him for his dry wit and endless sense of humor. An excellent father and husband, he worked his entire life to provide and care for his family. He will be remembered as a brilliant engineer, the epitome of a hard worker, a lover of animals, and a kind and charitable man. He will be dearly missed.

A private celebration of life was held on May 24, 2024. No further services are planned. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Rd., Kanab, Utah 84741, or to the charity of your choice that benefits animals.
